This post will be basically tackling all the distorted inklings of the author regarding what he does and what he thinks about some things going on in the industry. Feel free to comment. The author appreciates any feedback and does his best to reply to such as soon as possible.
Some Distinction
As someone who loves music with a passion, I can say that all of us have their preferred cups of tea when it comes to music. We cannot avoid to have our preferences. It is human nature. With us having preferences, it is inevitable that we search all the information regarding our favorite artists and listen to all the material that our preference could offer. This eventually turns us to fans. Fans of people who entertain crowds for a multitude of reasons – may such be for a living, to showcase their talent, and the like.
As fans, we tend to defend our favorites with intense passion in the beginning – bashing any detractor with words filled with enough spice that could make some people cringe. Such is the case of intense ‘respect’ that we have for our favorites. However, after thinking objectively, such should not be the case. As fans, we should respect people who do not prefer our cups of tea. After all, music serves people of all walks of life. We cannot force others to like our preferred cups of tea. The uniqueness gets lost if such is the case.
As someone who posts critiques concerning material from various entertainers, I cannot avoid but to give high ratings to really excellent material. One might ask what is my basis for those ratings. I say it is all about the musicality, the general vibe, and the overall product. When I give out low ratings, I try my best to justify the said ratings in the best way possible. What I post are basically reviews based on opinions. Opinions of people are vastly different. It is called uniqueness, people. If people do not like what reviewers say, respect should still be a prevalent value. It is alright to do some bashing but remember, every thing has its corresponding limits. We all have to be responsible, at some point. You may not like what I say all the time but please remember, we all are entitled to our respective opinions. After all, we all have various thoughts. Respect is simply what we are asking for.
Some Objectivity
Quality over reputation. This is the principle that I follow when it comes to listening all the material that could be found anywhere. It does not automatically mean that if the single or album is ranking considerably high, then it is already good. Ranking high in the charts only means that the material sold lots of copies.
Same goes for the producer-artist relationship. I can compare this to a parent-child relationship. It does not automatically mean that the child will act the same way that his parents did. Such could also be said for the producer-artist relationship. It does not necessarily mean that if the producer is already magnificent, then the artist would also be magnificent. The producer only gives out the overall direction that the artist’s material should undergo. The success of the material still weighs on the artist’s talent levels. If the talent level of the artist is considerably low, the producer could not act like a music messiah and try his best just to save the artist.
Intense entertainer worship. It has been a problem, in some aspects. Sure, there is nothing wrong with people defending their favorite entertainers but once other people share ‘unpleasant’ (negative reviews and the like) critiques about the material of their favorite entertainers, they should simply accept what the writer said and move on. Do not drag other innocent artists into the equation just to make a so-called point. Where is the objectivity?
What is a fan then?
A fan must be someone who willingly accepts any criticism or negative comments hurled towards their favorite artist. Also, a fan must not go ballistic over such type of posts. Be objective enough. Not everyone is going to be so positive about one’s preferred artist all the time. Do not resort to some dirty tactics such as mudslinging and posting derogatory tactics. A fan also must be responsible. Do not over-praise your preferred artist. Respect the opinions of others. Do not force other people into liking your ‘idol.’ Everybody has their corresponding tastes. Respect that.
What’s the point then?
Music is something that appeals to everyone. However, everyone has their own set of preferences. We are all fans but we must not go over-the-top once some negative write-up appears. Musicians are not perfect. They are human. They are prone to mistakes or errors. We have to realize that they will not create amazing music all the time. Be objective enough, please.
Reviewers only do their job. Fans should not bash them. Disagreeing is fine but that should be done with enough sensitivity. As I have said countless times in this piece, respect is the key in maintaining some harmony.
I may be a nobody but I think I have done my part with this piece. Digest everything that you can with this piece. I rest my case. Again, comments are much appreciated.
