Music lovers who are familiar with the works from the production house Xenomania would certainly know the name Florrie (Florrie Arnold). Florrie has already worked with popular acts such as Pet Shop Boys and Girls Aloud. With her talents as a drummer, it was a bit surprising to learn that she is now an aspiring pop star. Another surprising note is that she offers her tracks for FREE (yes, you read that right) in her website. One of those free offerings is her Introduction EP which sports four tracks.
Florrie’s free EP kicks off with Call of the Wild which has a very fast pace that feels just right – it is not too fast and would not alienate the listener’s expectations for the whole EP. Give Me Your Love features some drumming that may remind one of those tracks used for shows with nature as their focal point. The strokes of piano which make their presence felt repeatedly throughout the duration of the whole track do add a special level of depth into the track. Florrie’s vocals, as shown in the track, are suitably right in terms of achieving a perfect pop vibe.
Summer Nights ends up as the only problematic track in the EP in the sense that it lacks that ‘oomph’ when compared to the rest of the tracks in the EP. The last track of the EP, Left Too Late, has a techno-pop feel that may remind one of another act backed by Xenomania before, the recently-defunct Mini Viva. However, this is not really an issue as the track ends up doing a convincing job in showing that Florrie can be emotionally vulnerable and show the vulnerability off in an artistic manner.
All in all, Florrie’s Introduction EP basically did what it was tasked to do which is to let the world know that an aspiring pop musician who can do a heckuva job named Florrie exists. Florrie also has done a great job in establishing a very loyal fanbase by putting up her material for free over her website. With her Introduction EP being a great ‘teaser collection’ of well-crafted material, I am definitely looking forward to hear more of Florrie.
