Body Talk Pt. 3 by Robyn EP Review: Body Talk Pt. 3 by Robyn

Most of us know that Robyn has been giving off lots of amazing material this year. If you do not know the singles ‘Dancing On My Own,’ ‘Hang With Me,’ ‘Indestructible,’ shame on you. That sounds ridiculously harsh but honestly, if you have not heard those aforementioned singles as well as the two released installments in Robyn’s ‘Body Talk’ album series, please get your wallets and buy them right away.

After treating us wonderfully with delectable songs from both ‘Body Talk Pt. 1′ and ‘Body Talk Pt. 2,’ Robyn is back with the last installment, Body Talk Pt. 3. Just like its predecessors, the third Body Talk release aims to show the world how Robyn has evolved musically over the years. It features production work done by Klas Ahlund with the exception of ‘Time Machine’ for it was produced by Max Martin, the man responsible for ‘Show Me Love’ which was released way back in 1997 and went on to attain Gold status in the U.S.A.

Starting Body Talk Pt. 3 off is the lead single Indestructible which first made its appearance in ‘Body Talk Pt. 2′ albeit in an acoustic fashion. In Body Talk Pt. 3, Indestructible is given the synthesizer treatment and gets souped up in the process. For listeners who have fallen in love with the simplicity of its acoustic counterpart, falling in love with the souped up version may be tough. However, there is no denying that the single is still brilliant – managing to kick off Body Talk Pt. 3 on a high note.

The Max Martin-produced Time Machine is absolutely infectious with the synths doing a great job as regards to keeping the track very interesting to the listener. The track even gives out a reference to the film ‘Back To The Future’ with Robyn saying “all she wants is a DeLorean.” Call Your Girlfriend romanticizes the aspect of breaking up and even manages to convey the message that finding a new love amidst a relationship is fine although Robyn does show concern for the other party as well. We can safely assume that there is a nasty love triangle going on in the track. I guess Robyn’s songwriting skills are the true shining factor in the track.

Get Myself Together has some traces of 90s music in it. Showing Robyn experiencing nostalgia is a great thing to hear in the EP. Hearing Robyn say that ‘she wants to get her back on‘ shows some ferocity on her part but I just do not get the ‘feel’ of the track. As they say, it all depends on someone’s cup of tea. The closer, Stars 4-ever, may remind one of 80s music. The track closes Body Talk Pt. 3, the last of the Body Talk album series, on a very positive note. Although the verses are distinctly repetitive, the song does not possess any problem. The track is a fitting closer to the whole Body Talk series in a sense that it gives off the feelings that a human can experience – the feeling of togetherness and that experience of happiness.

Overall, Body Talk Pt. 3 may only have five tracks in it but the package is still compact. However, the absence of acoustic tracks (which were largely present in its predecessors) is notable. There is nothing wrong in going with an EP filled with synthesizer-heavy material but the inclusion of one acoustic track would have been great for an acoustic track would not have made the experience feel a bit samey at times. There is no denying, however, that Robyn has finally completed one of this year’s amazing album compilations. Let us just hope that critical success would also translate to some chart success. Robyn simply deserves it. Enough said.
