Grammy Awards The Aftermath: The Thoughts on The Grammy Nominations

It is that time of the year again where people who have supposedly great knowledge as regards to the cream of the crop of the industry flock together and decide who are the best among the best (okay, that was a long sentence). I was not able to watch the unveiling of the nominees but I would still like to share my thoughts regarding some of the awards that are up for grabs. My picks will be underlined and are also in bold form.

The awards will take place on February 13, 2011. You can view the full list of nominees at the official website. Feel free to post a comment regarding your thoughts as well!

Album of the Year
Recovery – Eminem
Need You Now – Lady Antebellum
The Fame Monster – Lady Gaga
Teenage Dream – Katy Perry
The Suburbs – Arcade Fire

First up is the Album of the Year award. Last year’s result was a massive joke. I still cannot get over the fact that Taylor Swift’s album topped that of GaGa’s last year. This year’s result will again be a massive joke if Katy Perry’s Teenage Dream wins this award. Teenage Dream is all filler except maybe for the title track and Firework. My pick would be The Fame Monster by Lady GaGa. This is her time to win a Grammy for Album of the Year. I still think she was robbed last year. I guess winning this year will rectify that mistake. However, Eminem’s Recovery might win this due to all the positive feedback it has received.

Record of the Year
“Love the Way You Lie” – Eminem & Rihanna
“Nothin’ on You” – B.o.B & Bruno Mars
“Empire State of Mind” – Jay-Z & Alicia Keys
“Need You Now” – Lady Antebellum
“F**k You” – Cee Lo Green

This is a bit tough but I do think that Empire State of Mind by Jay-Z and Alicia Keys deserves to win this award simply because it pays tribute to New York City in an epic fashion. Some may root for B.o.B’s collaboration with Bruno Mars, Nothin’ On You, and that is pretty much understandable. The said track introduced both artists to the listening public with aplomb and I would not be surprised if ever it wins the award. Cee Lo’s Fuck You will win the Song of the Year award but not this award in my opinion.

Song of the Year
“Love the Way You Lie” – Eminem & Rihanna
“F**k You”- Cee Lo Green
“The House That Built Me” – Miranda Lambert
“Beg, Steal, or Borrow” – Ray LaMontagne
“Need You Now” – Lady Antebellum

I have said in the discussion for the previous award that Cee Lo’s Fuck You deserves the Song of the Year award and rightfully so. I guess we all want to say those two words to the year 2010. I do think that it is either Cee Lo or Rihanna and Eminem who will take this award. However, I have to say that Cee Lo deserves it more instead of RiRi and Eminem.

Best New Artist
Drake
Esperanza Spalding
Justin Bieber
Florence + the Machine
Mumford & Sons

This should be a no-brainer. Florence + The Machine absolutely deserves this. If ever Bieber wins this award, I will not be surprised at all but I would be massively disappointed. If ever Florence Welsh does not win this, I would be happy with anyone else as long as it is not Bieber winning it.

Best Pop Performance by a Duo or Group With Vocals
“Don’t Stop Believin’ (Regionals Version)” – Glee Cast
“Misery” – Maroon 5
“The Only Exception” – Paramore
“Babyfather” – Sade
“Hey, Soul Sister (Live)” – Train

I am happy to see Glee get nominated for a Grammy but I think this is not their time. I am going for Babyfather by Sade. The track has proven that Sade still has it. However, I do have the feeling that Paramore might win this with The Only Exception. Sadly, I also think that Maroon 5 will not win this. So yes, it is either Paramore or Sade for this award in my opinion.

Best Female Pop Vocal Performance
Sara Bareilles – “King of Anything”
Beyoncé – “Halo (Live Version)”
Norah Jones – “Chasing Pirates”
Lady Gaga – “Bad Romance”
Katy Perry – “Teenage Dream”

Lady GaGa’s Bad Romance will win this simply because the track has become a pop anthem. However, I seriously wish that King of Anything by Sara Bareilles wins this award. It may not be as great as ‘Love Song’ but the quality of it still deserves the award.

Best Dance Recording
“Rocket” – Goldfrapp
“In For The Kill” – La Roux
“Dance in the Dark” – Lady Gaga
“Only Girl (In The World)” – Rihanna
“Dancing on My Own” – Robyn

This award is tough to call. We got an assortment of great dance tracks excluding Rihanna’s. However, Robyn’s Dancing On My Own is my pick to win the award. Robyn may not be having success in the charts but I do hope that winning a Grammy finally proves to the public that they have missed a lot by not listening to Robyn’s tracks. La Roux and Goldfrapp are also contenders for this award but Robyn deserves it the most.

The Snubs

Kylie Minogue

Aphrodite is one of the best albums to come out this year. This is one of many deserving candidates that should have been a nominee instead of Katy Perry’s Teenage Dream.

Sia

We Are Born by Sia also is another album that could have replaced Teenage Dream. If ever Teenage Dream wins a Grammy for Album of the Year, I would be crying injustice.

Robyn

Body Talk by Robyn could also have been the fifth nominee. You all have noticed that I have been ripping Teenage Dream. I guess I do not have to do it all over again just to prove my point.

Scissor Sisters

Invisible Light should have merited some consideration for Song of the Year. I guess the award-giving body did not think of it as such.

Did any of my thoughts cause you to feel anger? What about joy? Whatever the feeling is, again as I have said earlier, feel free to post a comment!
