Carmelo Anthony Knicks The Ball Is On Isiah: Knicks Finally Acquire Carmelo Anthony

In what was still called as a ‘blockbuster trade’ because a marquee player was involved, Carmelo Anthony finally got his wish to become a Knick.

Before any thoughts regarding this trade are shared, let us first share the details regarding this trade.

New York Knicks
Acquired: Carmelo Anthony, Chauncey Billups, Shelden Williams, Renaldo Balkman, and Anthony Carter
Traded Away: Danilo Gallinari, Raymond Felton, Wilson Chandler, Timofey Mosgov, 2014 first-round pick, two second-round picks acquired from the Golden Warriors in the sign-and-trade deal for David Lee, Anthony Randolph, Eddy Curry, and $3 million

Denver Nuggets
Acquired: Danilo Gallinari, Raymond Felton, Wilson Chandler, Timofey Mosgov, Knicks’ 2014 first-round pick, Knicks’ two second-round picks acquired from the Golden Warriors in the sign-and-trade deal for David Lee, and $3 million
Traded Away: Carmelo Anthony, Chauncey Billups, Shelden Williams, Renaldo Balkman, and Anthony Carter

Minnesota Timberwolves
Acquired: Anthony Randolph and Eddy Curry
Traded Away: Corey Brewer

So that is how it went.

For New York fans, you have to be amazed and disappointed at the same time. You knew that with patience, you could have gotten Carmelo via free agency. Instead, a figure who goes by the name of Isiah Thomas ruins everything and convinces James Dolan that getting Carmelo now via trade is the best option.

Sadly, that is not the way to go.

With due respect, I have to say that trading away Gallo, Felton, and Chandler depleted the Knicks. Yes, you did get Billups in return but considering Billups’ age, this trade can only be considered as a ‘short-term victory.’ Knicks fans should not be expecting any championship banner hanging up in the rafters soon either. Championship squads have depth. Championship squads do have other parts that, when put together, manage to co-exist and carry the team in stretches.

This trade was obviously led by Isiah Thomas and unlike his ridiculously foolish trades in the past, this new trade is not a franchise killer.

Carmelo and Amare The Ball Is On Isiah: Knicks Finally Acquire Carmelo Anthony

With this trade, a formidable one-two scoring punch in the name of Stoudemire and Anthony was formed. If Amare struggles banging in the post, Anthony can open things up with his ability to score from the outside. However, it must be noted that Anthony can only help the Knicks on the offensive end. Defensively, he will not help the Knicks. He will be a liability. Transition defense-wise, Anthony will also not be that much of a help.

Still, Knicks fans have to think that Melo is a huge improvement over Gallo. Speaking of talents, Carmelo has more offensive talents than Gallo. He may have nights where the field goal percentage looks absolutely horrid but Melo is Melo. He can light it up anytime offensively. With this trade, expect the Knicks to be more competitive in handling the likes of Miami, Chicago, and Boston.

However, the ball is still on you, Isiah.

It still makes me shake my head in amazement that you still actually have the guts  to go to James Dolan and tell him that this direction is the way to go. You were responsible for signing Eddy Curry into an atrocious contract. You were responsible in trading for Stephon Marbury and Steve Francis who also had ridiculous contracts. Do not even make me mention the situation involving Jerome James. Oops, I just did.

With this trade, all the moves that Donnie Walsh made were put into waste. Donnie Walsh had a great plan. He actually managed to make the Knicks free some cap space and still be competitive at the same time. This Melo trade somehow screws things up. Stop even thinking about acquiring Chris Paul or Deron Williams to run the floor for the Knicks come 2012. Why? This trade depleted any chance of that happening. With no Collective Bargaining Agreement put into place, uncertainties involving the salary cap are still present. With both Amare and Melo collectively getting $40 million which is roughly 80 percent of the salary cap threshold.

However, there is no denying that Knicks fans should rejoice. After all, they got someone who really desired to be a Knick. Someone who happens to have the ability to hit shots when they matter the most.

Isiah Thomas, however, should not get any credit for this trade whatsoever. He only messed up the plans of Donnie Walsh which involved patience. Isiah Thomas screwed the mentality of James Dolan. If New York’s future gets screwed up, blame this trade. Who made the trade?

Someone who goes by the name of Isiah Thomas.

Blame Isiah yes. Why? James Dolan would have stuck with Walsh’s plan involving patience if not for Isiah’s presence. Isiah Thomas still is an influential figure in the Knicks’ dealings. The trade is a victory for the Knicks in the short run but in the long run, they can get screwed because of this. So who made this trade? Isiah. So yes, I think he deserves the blame if such case happens.
