So I assume every Coldplay fan (or stan) has heard Every Teardrop Is A Waterfall by Coldplay. Every Teardrop Is A Waterfall, I assume, is a promo single for the band’s upcoming fifth studio album which is produced by the one and only Brian Eno.
Every Teardrop Is A Waterfall is not the best Coldplay track that has been released. However, that does not mean that the track actually sucks. Actually, the track would fit perfectly into the band’s previous album Viva La Vida or Death And All His Friends or even the band’s Prospekt’s March EP if you want to do such. Perhaps, the track serves as a bridge for their upcoming album. If that is how they envisioned the purpose of Every Teardrop Is A Waterfall, then I have to say they succeeded.
The track actually samples I Go To Rio (YouTube link) by Peter Allen. One should not be surprised regarding the band doing some sampling for they have done such already with their single Talk which sampled Computer Love by Kraftwerk. The track, with its edgy guitars as well as its acoustic counterparts, may really let you think that the track is well within the band’s range albeit they do sound as if they came straight out of the Viva La Vida album. However, it has to be mentioned did change things up a bit with the introduction of electronic undercurrents. So yes, it is Coldplay-esque and not so Coldplay-esque at the same time. Sounds confusing, no?
So yes, this new offering from Coldplay is a grower. It will not let you sing along that quick. It definitely is catchy but not as much as, let us say, Yellow or even Clocks. The elements that have made the band endearing to the masses – the sensible lyrics and the clever instrumentation amongst many others – are actually present but again, this is simply not the best Coldplay single ever. Yes, it is great but not that great.
So what happens now? We all know what happened when the band released Violet Hill. Many thought the Viva La Vida album will suck but it did not. The band surprised many (yours truly included) with the exceptional quality of the Viva La Vida single. I assume this will happen again once the band releases the second single for their Brian Eno-produced fifth studio effort.
